Buying an Amazon KDP Business: What to Check Before You Pay
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Buying an Amazon KDP Business: What to Check Before You Pay
  • Overview: A Kindle Direct Publishing business is really a catalog plus an account. Verify royalties, rights, and account health before buying someone else's books....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by Try2Rich Capital editorial monitoring desk.

An Amazon KDP business looks simple on a listing: a set of books earning monthly royalties. In practice you are buying a catalog of titles, the rights to those titles, and a publishing account with its own history. Each of those can hide problems, and the most common buyer regret is discovering after payment that the books were not really the seller's to sell, or that the account was already on thin ice.

Start with royalty verification inside the KDP dashboard, not in screenshots. Ask for a live screen share of at least twelve months of royalty reports, broken down by title and marketplace. Look for concentration risk: a catalog where one book earns 80 percent of royalties is far more fragile than one with earnings spread across twenty titles. Also check whether royalties are trending down, which often signals an aging catalog with no new releases to refresh it.

Rights and authorship come next, and they matter more than the numbers. Confirm the seller actually wrote the books or holds clear rights from ghostwriters, including whether ghostwriter agreements transfer to a new owner. Books built on public domain content, low-content interiors like blank notebooks, or trademarked terms carry extra risk, since Amazon enforces content policies aggressively and can remove titles or close accounts without restoring them.

Account health is the third pillar. Ask about prior policy warnings, terminated titles, or withheld royalties, and review the account's standing together. Also clarify what transfers: the KDP account itself often cannot be transferred in the way a website can, so many deals are structured as asset sales where you republish under your own account, which resets reviews and rankings. Price that reset into your offer, because losing accumulated reviews can cut sales sharply.

Finally, plan the handover like a publisher, not just a buyer. Get source files, covers, keywords, and advertising campaign data, and keep the seller available for questions during the transition. If the catalog depends on paid ads to sell, learn the campaigns before the seller leaves. A KDP purchase rewards buyers who verify rights and account history first and treat the catalog as a living business, not a passive royalty machine.

Many KDP catalogs look profitable only because the seller excludes advertising spend from the headline numbers, or because ad costs have crept up while royalties stayed flat. Ask for advertising reports alongside royalty reports, and calculate profit after ad spend for each title and for the catalog as a whole. A book that earns 300 a month in royalties but costs 250 in ads is barely profitable, and a catalog whose ads are managed by the seller's personal skill may perform worse under your management. Price the deal on profit after all marketing costs, not on royalty totals.

A catalog built around a series is worth more than a pile of unrelated standalone books, because series readers buy through the whole sequence and each new release lifts the older titles. When evaluating a catalog, check how much revenue comes from read-through, meaning sales of book two and beyond driven by book one, versus standalone sales that must each be marketed separately. A strong series with a clear audience and an unfinished arc offers growth potential a new owner can exploit by writing the next installment, while a scattered catalog of unrelated titles offers no such compounding effect.

KDP royalties cross borders, and tax withholding can surprise buyers who have not checked the details. Sellers in different countries face different withholding rates depending on tax treaties and submitted tax forms, and a catalog's reported royalties may already reflect withholding that will change under your tax status. Ask the seller what withholding rate applies, confirm which tax forms are on file, and speak to an accountant before closing if you buy across borders. A catalog that looks profitable under one tax treatment can look very different under another, and this check belongs in diligence, not after payment.
